What is RVSM?

How does RVSM affect aviation ground support?

How can Nav-Aids Ltd help you meet RVSM requirements?

RVSM TESTING Technical Seminar
PITOT STATIC and RVSM TESTING SEMINAR

Navair Inc and Barfield Inc are teaming up to offer a FREE SEMINAR on Pitot Static and the new Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum Test Equipment requirements.

The morning session will include a review of pitot and static measurements and test equipment requirements. Those not exceeding 29000ft altitude will want to attend this session to learn about the latest test instruments to maintain aircraft systems. The afternoon session will cover the new RVSM testing requirements for those flying above 29000 ft. Is your current test instrument up to the task? Can it be brought up to date quickly? A full session with an open forum and question and answer period will cover these and other topics.

Sandwiches and coffee will be served at noon.

The Montreal Seminar will be held at The Montreal Airport Hilton on 12 July 2004.

A second seminar will be held at Canadian Forces Base Trenton on 13 July 2004. The venue for the Trenton seminar will be announced closer to the 13 July to those who wish to attend.

Please reply by return email with your intention to attend and the names of any of your colleagues who will be joining you.

RVSM

Reduced Vertical Separation Minima

The purpose of RVSM is to increase the number of aircraft safely occupying the same volume of air space.

RVSM reduces the required vertical separation of aircraft from 2000' to 1000' without diminishing or impairing flight safety. This allows more aircraft to use popular and previously congested air space and routes.

This is safely accomplished by increasing the accuracy, sensitivity and reliability of aircraft instruments, most importantly the altimeter.

RVSM only applies to altitudes between 29000' and 41000' (FL290 and FL410), below 29000' a vertical separation of 2000' is the standard.

To fly in RVSM airspace aircraft must be approved for RVSM operations (carry special equipment and be certified). An exception from this is made for non-equipped State aircraft, e.g. military fighters.

RVSM requires more stringent testing procedures, for example -

RVSM test procedures require the simultaneous connection of all main and stand-by static ports on both sides of the aircraft fuselage.

The RVSM test procedures also require the simultaneous connection of all pitot tubes.

Nav-Aids Ltd manufactures RVSM compliant pitot static test equipment, adaptors and air data accessories kits to meet and exceed the stringent requirements of RVSM.

The history of RVSM:

RVSM  is a newer set of rules & regulations that has been recommended by the ICAO, and is enforced by the FAA, the JAA and other civil aviation authorities around the world.

A 2000' minimum vertical separation was necessary because the instruments used to display, report, and control aircraft altitude had poor accuracy compared to today’s standards.

The process of safely changing this separation standard required a study to assess the actual performance of airspace users under the then current separation (2000-ft) and potential performance under the new standard (1000-ft). In 1988, the ICAO Review of General Concept of Separation Panel (RGCSP) completed this study and concluded that safe implementation of the 1000-ft separation standard was technically feasible.

Other benefits of RVSM:

  • Improved and more efficient operations

  • Greater availability of the more fuel-efficient altitudes

  • Increased probability that an operator will be cleared onto the desired track or altitude

  • Enhanced controller flexibility to manage traffic through an increased number of available altitudes

In summary, RVSM allows aircraft to safely fly more optimum profiles, gain fuel savings and increase airspace capacity.
